Traffic Signal Bicycle Detection Upgrades

signal Detection cameras for cyclists

With its robust network of trails and bike lanes, Danville is a desirable destination for cyclists. Whether you're bike commuter, a weekend road biker, or simply riding downtown with your family to the Farmer's Market, Danville has a lot to offer.

To support bicycle travel, the Town is working to enhance your biking experience through the installation of bicycle detection systems at signalized intersections. Traditional in-ground traffic signal detection systems are magnetic and can at times be problematic for detecting cyclists accurately and consistently. New video camera detection technologies help solve that problem.

When the cyclist arrives at a traffic signal equipped with the camera technology, it is able to "see" and recognize the bike and then places a call to signal.  A small green bicycle sign equipped with a blue bicycle light mounted on the signal pole (located to the cyclists right) will then illuminate to provide the cyclist with the message that they have been detected.
