[ARCHIVED] New Program Provides Rebates for ADU Construction

ADU Accelerator Square

ADU construction rebates aimed at expanding affordable housing in East Bay

In an effort to combat the ongoing housing crisis, a new initiative has been launched to accelerate the production of accessory dwelling units (ADUs) across California. The Senate District 7 ADU Accelerator Program, spearheaded by State Senator Steve Glazer, aims to support homeowners in constructing these smaller housing units, with a focus on affordability and sustainability. The program will include 15 municipalities across the East Bay, including Danville, with a total program budget allocation of $2,500,000.

Danville has been allocated $79,500 to distribute to residents and is opening applications for its program October 1. The funding allocation is based on a per capita amount of $1.87 per resident, and rebates will be provided on a first-come, first-served basis until all the funds are expended. This program seeks to promote the development of new ADUs through a range of incentives and support measures, and homeowners will be eligible for rebates of up to $7,500 for the construction of new ADU units. For property owners who build ADUs that are deed-restricted to low-income households for a minimum of 20 years, rebates will increase up to $15,000.

The initiative targets smaller units, offering financial support only for ADUs that are 1,000 square feet or less. This size limit is intended to encourage more cost-effective, efficient designs that can fit into various residential settings. The Senate District 7 ADU Accelerator Program reflects a broader effort across California to tackle the housing shortage, making it easier for homeowners to contribute to increasing the region’s housing supply while promoting affordable housing options for lower-income residents.
