[ARCHIVED] Sir John Falstaff and the Merry Wives of Windsor Comes to Danville

Sir John Falstaff

SPARC Theater reimagines Shakespeare in a new historical context starting August 8

The Town of Danville announces the return of SPARC Theater’s summer Shakespeare production at the Village Theatre. This season, SPARC presents Sir John Falstaff and the Merry Wives of Windsor, with performances running weekends from August 8 through August 24. Shows will take place at 7:30 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, with Sunday matinees at 2 p.m.

Known for its contemporary and accessible interpretations of classic theater, SPARC Theater brings renewed energy and perspective to one of Shakespeare’s most comedic plays. Sir John Falstaff and the Merry Wives of Windsor centers on the misadventures of Sir John Falstaff as he attempts to woo two married women for financial gain, only to be met with clever resistance and elaborate pranks.

This year’s production sets the play just after the American Civil War, offering a distinctive historical context while maintaining the integrity of Shakespeare’s original language and humor. The updated setting highlights themes of power, pride, and community in a way that resonates with modern audiences, while providing a fresh lens through which to experience the play’s social satire.

As part of this summer’s programming, SPARC Theater will host a Family Day on Sunday, August 17, aimed at families with younger children. This special matinee provides an opportunity for families to enjoy and learn about Shakespeare together in a fun and welcoming setting. Discounted tickets for Family Day will be available for children and students using the promo code SHAKESPEAREFAM prior to selecting seats for the August 17 performance.

The Village Theatre & Art Gallery building dates back to 1913 and has been part of the community since its start as the Grange Hall. The building hosts quarterly art exhibitions and numerous live performances annually. The Art Gallery and theatre box office are open Wednesday-Friday, noon to 5 p.m. and Saturday 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The box office is also open one hour prior to any live performance start time.

The Village Theatre is located at 233 Front Street in downtown Danville. For more information, please contact John Dunn, Program Coordinator for Performing Arts, at jdunn@danville.ca.gov or 925-314-3418. Tickets available now at www.danville.ca.gov/sparc.
