State-mandated review aims to reduce waste contamination & promote proper recycling practices

RecycleSmart, in collaboration with SCS Engineers, is performing “lid-flips” in Danville neighborhoods the week of September 30 as part of a visual inspection process to ensure proper waste sorting. This initiative is in line with Senate Bill (SB) 1383, which mandates annual route audits to monitor waste contamination and improve recycling practices across the state.

During the inspections, RecycleSmart teams will visually inspect carts for the correct separation of organics, recyclables, and landfill materials. Organics, such as food scraps, yard trimmings, and uncoated food-soiled paper, should be separated from landfill waste to reduce environmental impact. Organics currently make up over half of the material sent to landfills and are a significant contributor to climate change.

If any items are found in the wrong cart, residents will receive a "cart tag" detailing the contamination and providing tips for proper sorting. No fines will be issued during this inspection process. Republic Services, the local waste hauler, may refuse to service contaminated carts. If your cart is not serviced, contact Republic Services at (925) 685-4711 to address the issue.

For more information about the inspections or SB 1383, visit RecycleSmart at RecycleSmart.org or call (925) 906-1801.
