[ARCHIVED] Speed Leads to Rise in Traffic Accidents

Januray - September Traffic Incidents by Age Group

Danville Police are asking residents to watch their speed and take their time, in order to get to their destinations safely, as an uptick in traffic accidents was seen in 2019.

Many of the accidents occurred in the downtown and Camino Tassajara corridors, and an in-depth analysis showed speeding and unsafe turning movements (illegal u-turns, unsafe lane changes, etc) were the overwhelming cause of collisions in Town.  Additionally, analysis showed that the least experienced drivers were also overwhelmingly more likely to be at fault in a collision.  Drivers in the 16 to 25-year-old age group were more than twice as likely to be the cause of a collision when compared to any other 10-year age group.

What is Danville doing to curb accidents in Town?

Enforcement has been increased along the downtown and Camino Tassajara corridors. Education is also a component, with the Police Department providing educational opportunities such as Street Smarts and the CHP Start Smart program to younger drivers.

The Danville PD Traffic Unit encourages drivers to:

  • Slow down
  • Do not make illegal turning movements
  • Stop at stop signs and red lights and only proceed when safe
  • Do not use your cell phone or other distractions while driving, pay attention to the road.

The graph shows that between January and September 2019:
There were 40 accidents with drivers aged 16-25. There were 16 accidents with drivers aged 26-35. There were 16 accidents with drivers aged 36-45. There were 18 accidents with drivers aged 46-55. There were 10 accidents with drivers aged 56-65. There were 16 accidents with drivers aged 66-75. There were 9 accidents with drivers aged 76-85. There were 3 accidents with drivers aged 86-95.
