Out and about in the wilderness with the Town of Danville
New classes to focus on introducing Danville residents to the joys of camping/paddling
Have you been itching to get out and experience nature at one of the dozens and dozens of state parks/wilderness areas here in California? Or getting out on the ocean and seeing the sea lions and other amazing wildlife just off our coast?
Is the only thing keeping you from doing any of those things a lack of experience? Never done it before? Well, then the Town of Danville has some new programs that will help neophyte campers/paddlers get their feet wet, so to speak.
Three new programs are starting up in April and May in the Town of Danville and residents will have the opportunity to get some valuable knowledge and experience to help out with their camping or paddling adventure.
The first class is Intro to Backpacking: In this class, for ages 12 and up, students will get to learn the basics of backpacking. How to pack, balance, proper gear fit and use, cooking and more. Instructors will go over local areas for backpacking and adventure. And for those with a "green" sensibility, the class is taught with an eye towards proper stewardship of the environment. Leave No Trace and Sustainability are two core concepts covered in this amazing class, which ends with an overnight camping trip with all camping gear and food included. Class begins May 8, 2012 and runs through May 29, 2012.
Then there are two Camping Workshops held in April. These all ages classes cover all of the basics of camping. It is designed to introduce students to the baic skills and tools needed to maximize the safety and fun of the camping experience. Skills covered in the classes include choose a site, what you should bring camping, local areas to camp and tips on equipment. The workshops are held on April 3, 2012 and April 24, 2012.
Finally, we take to the sea with Adventure Paddling. This class, designed for ages 10-65, is held at the Berkeley Maarina. Adventure Paddling teaches students the basics of sea kayaking and paddle-boarding. The two-day intensive course teaches the fundamentals of the paddle stroke, balance, steering, equipment and water safety. Classes will start with instruction on the basics and then students will take to the water and paddle out into the Bay to practice all of the skills being learned. Cal Adventures provides wetsuits, spray jacks and personal flotation devices. Students should provide water shoes or booties. All students must bring a signed Cal Adventures waiver and emergency contact form on the first day of class. Forms and directions can be found on www.recsports.berkeley.edu/caladventures.
Danville is in an amazing location in relation to many many different environments for camping/hiking/paddling. Come try out these classes and get started on your own California Adventure!
