Town of Danville looking for talented, energetic young people
The rain and cold of winter may still be upon us, but the Town of Danville Recreation Services Department is already looking ahead to this summer, when the pools will open and camps will get underway. Each year, the Town offers a wide variety of programs for area youth, ranging from swim classes to day camps. And all of those programs need youthful instructors and lifeguards to make them work.
Summer employment is a part-time temporary position, where those hired will find themselves working alongside a great team of enthusiastic and excited co-workers and bringing happiness to a number of area young people. Right now, the Town is recruiting for a variety of position in the areas of Aquatics and Summer Day Camps. This is an incredible opportunity to gain valuable work experience.
Each of the Town's camps features weekly age-appropriate themes that the week's activities and field trips are planned around. Staff will be working directly with the children at the camps, helping with crafts and guiding play activities. Former Camp Counselor Will Kreiser said his experience in 2009-10 was an unforgettable one.
"I thoroughly enjoyed my experience as a day camp counselor with the Town of Danville. Each staff member is as fun-loving and playful as the kids we watch, but simultaneiously responsible enough to be safe," he stated.
Application deadline for Summer Camps is 5:00 p.m. on March 25, 2011. The most qualified applicants will be invited to participate in a group interview process. Those chosen from this group will move on to a formal interview. Those candidates being considered as Site Leader and Site Manager will be brought in for a separate formal interview.
The Town's Aquatics program works to provide an aquatic environment that is safe, instructive and fun through such programs as Recreational and Lap Swim, Learn to Swim, Junior Lifeguard and Lifeguard Training Class. Duties of an aquatic staff member include lifeguarding, swim instruction, leading pool parties, daily fitness swims, cashier work and other administrative duties.
2010 Pool Manager Brynn Kurtz said she greatly enjoyed her summer working as part of the Aquatic Staff. "Being an employee of the Town of Danville has been a very rewarding experience," she said. "Not only am I able to gain great job and leadership experience as well as work with a great group of people, I am also able to serve my community."
Application deadline for Aquatics is 5:00 p.m. on April 29, 2011. All applications will be reviewed and acted upon as received. Positions will remain open until filled. All applicants must be able to provide copies of current certifications or proof of registration in an American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Class. The most qualified applicants will be invited to a formal interview. Following the interview candidats may be invited to participate in an Aquatics Skills Test.
Applicants for both positions must be available to attend mandatory Staff Training Week, June 13-17 and request no more than one week of time off during the summer.
In addition to getting great work experience and learning good skills, staff members have the opportunity to come back year after year for their summer positions and earn promotion to positions with more opportunity and responsibility.
