Area Youth to create safety book

Street Smarts contest lets young artists shine

Elementary School students throughout the San Ramon Valley will be getting out their art supplies to take part in the 7th Annual Street SmartsSteetsmarts1  Storybook Poster Contest.

Each year, students in grades K-5 draw illustrations to go along with a safety-themed storybook. The content of the book is written by local author Dana Mentink, and each year follows a different character.

The program is put on by Street Smarts, partnership between the Town of Danville, San Ramon Valley Unified School District, City of San Ramon, Contra Costa County and the San Ramon Valley Council of PTAs. Street Smarts is able to provide the contest each year through the sponsorship of Sunset Development Company and a federal Safe Routes to School Grant.  The contest was created to give students a way to creatively approach safety issues.

This year’s storybook is, “The Great Zoo Escape.”  Animals escape from the zoo and students are tasked with bringing the animals to school safely. Along the way, they learn about pedestrian safety, bicycle safety and the benefits of walking or cycling to school.

streetsmarts2The book is ten pages, and students submit their illustrations for specific pages. The content of the various pages is available with the contest forms so that the artists will have a good idea of what is happening on the page they are illustrating. Ten illustrations are chosen, with the lucky winners receiving a bicycle safety kit, art kit and $40 Target gift card.

The completed storybook will be unveiled at the Street Smarts Storybook Poster Contest Awards Ceremony March 10, 2011 at the Dougherty Valley Performing Arts Center in San Ramon.

Contest entry forms and information are available at SRVUSD Elementary Schools, as well as locations throughout the area. These include the Danville, Oak Hill Park and San Ramon Community Centers and the Danville, San Ramon and Dougherty Station Libraries. All contest materials and rules are available and students must use the entry forms provided. Entries may be dropped off at the same locations, deadline is February 7, 2011.
