General Plan to be topic of Joint Session

Town Council and Planning Commission to discuss future planning

On Wednesday December 15, the Danville Town Council and Planning Commission will hold the second in a series of study sessions on the Danville General Plan Update.  More study sessions are planned for January 4 and January 25 with future sessions to be scheduled for February, March, and April.

The Danville General Plan is a long-range planning document which will shape the look and feel of the Town for the next 20 years.  During the coming months, the Council and Commission will discuss the General Plan Update by focusing on two major tracks: a “map” track, which looks at allowable land uses and densities in different parts of the Town; and a “policy” track, which looks at local policies relating to development, design, transportation, growth management, historic preservation, community services, parks, resource conservation, environmental hazards, and sustainability.

The December 15 meeting will focus on the “map” track—specifically on issues relating to density.  Part of the General Plan Update involves increasing the allowable density on at least 10 acres of land (on scattered sites) in order to provide multi-family housing opportunities for current and future Danville residents.  This responds to a State requirement relating to housing affordability and housing for persons with special needs.  Town staff will provide a presentation on issues relating to the General Plan Map and the factors to be considered when designating land for denser development.

The Council and Commission will be asked to provide feedback on the best locations for density, and the design and development objectives to be considered for these areas.  Examples of development at different densities will be provided to facilitate the discussion.  At this point, the discussion will not focus on individual parcels, but rather on broader issues related to growth, community development, and design.  The January 25 meeting will focus more specifically on the individual properties where land use changes will be studied.

The Wednesday December 15 work session is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at the Town Meeting Hall, 201 Front St.  The public is invited to attend.
