Construction crews have completed the work of digging out the foundation area beneath the Veterans Memorial Building, 400 Hartz Ave., and are gearing up to pour concrete foundations in the next several weeks.
Preparations for the foundation work included suspending the existing structure on a lattice-work of steel girders held in place by concrete pillars, and then using excavators to dig out the soil beneath the building. A preliminary layer of cement was poured this week, as a barrier against groundwater intrusion. Before the actual foundation is poured, additional steel reinforcement will be put in place and a water-proof membrance will be installed.
The $8.1 million reconstruction/renovation of the historic Veterans building began July 5, 2010. It is estimated to reach completion at the end of 2011. To see more pictures of the construction work, click the thumbnails below.
