Every winter the Town of Danville closes the natural grass sports fields during the winter months. This provides the Town with the opportunity to renovate and rest the fields as well as protect them from significant damage during the rainy season. Fields are closed to all user groups as well as the general public. This moratorium also pertains to San Ramon Valley Unified School District natural grass fields within the Town of Danville as well.
This year the moratorium will be in place from December 5, 2016 through February 28, 2017. During the moratorium period the grass receives fertilization, aeration and seeding along with some well needed rest. The skinned infields of the baseball diamonds receive new ball field mix and are prepared for the spring baseball season. It is anticipated that the large dog park area at Hap Magee Ranch Park will receive new sod in early December 2016 barring any watering restrictions imposed by either EBMUD or the State. This would give the sod approximately a three month establishment period before it would also re-open on March 1, 2017.
The Town takes great pride in the condition of the sports fields and are always striving to provide the user groups with the best sports fields possible. By allowing the fields time to rest and recover during the winter months gives the sorts fields a much better chance of surviving the spring, summer and fall sport seasons when the fields are heavily utilized for everything from baseball to soccer.
Weather permitting, the Town’s natural grass sports fields will re-open to public use on Wednesday, March 1, 2017.
The Town utilizes a Sports Field Information phone line that residents can call to determine the status of all Town maintained sports fields. The phone line, (925)314-3484 is updated by noon on weekdays and by 7:00 a.m. on weekends during periods of inclement weather.
